Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War. Auschwitz consisted of 3 camps in total: Auschwitz, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz.
Auschwitz was originally intended to take and hold Jewish prisoners. However, it was quickly redesigned as an extermination camp. The estimated numbers lie between 1.1 and 1.6 million deaths. Most of the deaths were because of the gassing in the chambers. However, fatigue, famine, and sickness were also a frequent cause of death.
Auschwitz I still holds most of its original buildings. Nowadays, these buildings function as a museum.
Auschwitz II is barely in original state. Shortly after the war, the local inhabitants tore down the camp and used the resources for reconstruction.
It is not only the locals that tried to destroy Auschwitz. To cover up any proof, the SS tried to destroy the camp. They blew up the archives and crematoria.
The tour lasts around 6 hours. During the tour, you will visit Auschwitz 1, and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. You will visit the permanent exhibition. Here you can take a look at the shoes and suitcases. Or the photo and film material collected by the Nazis.
